MLK. He looks like he enjoyed a few more meals than Malcolm. MLK seemed more of a sensualist and not just in the food department.
Who would you rather have as your boss at a McDonalds: George W or John Kerry?
Definitely Bush. He probably wouldn't take his job too seriously as exhibited in his current occupation. You could get away with murder. Kerry is too austere. No fun. I hate to say it but Bush seems a bit more playful. He seems like the kinda guy that would put foreign objects in the customer's food just for laughs.
What sex would you like to be reincarnated as?
I'm happy as a male. I'd stick with that.
You are discussing the music of Prince with Buddha, Jesus and Mohamed. Which of them turns out to be the biggest Prince fan and why?
Isn't Prince a big God freak?...He seems to give a few nods to Jesus. Flattery is usually reciprocal. I'd say Jesus. Prince nailed the two most controversial subjects in our times. Sex and Religion.
Why are you a musician?
I love travelling the world and getting paid for it. I have a hard time subscribing to the two week vacation a year, retire at 65 way of life. With music life is unpredictable, challenging and my wanderlust gets satiated. If I weren't a musician I would probably have to be a Trucker or Pilot. I love motion. It's also the one job where debauchery is encouraged and nurtured.
You wake up severely hungover in a las vegas hotel room with no memory of the previous night to find yourself clutching a whip and situated in bed between a snoring clarence thomas (wearing nothing but a white leather mini skirt and fishnets) and condoleeza rice in a catwoman suit. What are the first words out of your mouth?
I better call my sponsor.
You are running for president in 2008. What is your campaign slogan?
“Go Gibbs! Go Green!”
What, if anything, do you have in common with Youth?
Everything. I lived in a squat in London (Camden Town) and had to go through a similar process to get accepted. I was 21 at the time and a musician busking in the subways playing the odd shows. My mother died early in my life and a brother died when I was in London. The only difference was I unfortunately had no way to get back for the funeral.
If you could feel in everyday life the way you do when you're making music would you still make music? And why?
My everyday life is making music. You tricky bugger!...No more trick questions!
La Liz was fond of having her favorite chili sent from a Beverly Hills restaurant to wherever she happened to be working in the world. If you had it like that, (and who says you don't?) what transnational or transcontinental craving would you have satisfied during PS's run?
Corky's in Memphis has some great barbecue. There is also a great mexican place here in Brooklyn called Castro's on Myrtle Ave. They make the "real" mexican food I'm accustomed to back in San Diego. Not those lame Burrito aberrations that they overfill with rice to save money. The key ingredient to true mexican food is cilantro. I used to surf at K-38's in Mexico where this guy made the most incredible fish tacos with cabbage and a mysterious white sauce. When I came to NYC with my first band, our bass player's Mom used to send us Carne Asada burritos from Roberto's (in San Diego). That would be my first choice. Roberto's Carne Asada Burritos!
What did you like most about being in Berkeley?
I am a newcomer to Passing Strange so I have only done the Broadway run, workshop at Joe's Pub and The Negro Problem show in Central Park. I have been to Berkeley though! Last time I was there we lost our friend's pug while she was at work and combed the Berkely streets for hours. Luckily we found him!
It is the future and the borough of Queens has been given over exclusively to women. Men, while not allowed to live or work there, are allowed 24 hour visitor passports as well as weekend passes - but at a very high cost. To the women: do you think you'd wanna live there? To the men: how often do you think you'd visit?
Never. I never go there as it is unless It's on the way to the airport. A place that is exclusive to only women would seem to attract the kind of women that wouldn't want me around. I like going where its warm!
While browsing thru the Schomburg library you happen upon an undiscovered letter in which Frederick Douglas outs himself as a huge leather queen. According to the letter, he and Honest Abe spent a memorable weekend once in a cozy log cabin. Do you go public with this finding?
Well, Frederick Douglas was Victoria Woodhull's (first woman to run for President) running mate in 1872. Considering she was a known prostitute before politics and her involvement in the Equal Rights Party, I'm not sure if Abe and Fred's romp would turn many heads. However, if the letter were to attract some attention I would sell it to the highest bidder on ebay like a true liberal, starving-musician capitalist!
Why is it when you ask artists what they would do if they couldn't do art they usually say "teach"?
Summers off!
Which character in Passing Strange would you like to sit next to on a long plane ride? Which would you not like to sit next to? And why.
Marianna and Desi are very sexy stewardesses. I would want to be seated in between them cause Marianna would play with my curls as I fell asleep. Mr. Venus is scary. He'd probably want to talk about "high art" or something equally as insipid while I'd just want to read my Rolling Stone and watch "Monsters of Rock."
